The Witcher on Netflix appears to have taken a chance with a choice that, although made too soon, will give the series the proper conclusion as it gets set for Liam Hemsworth’s premiere as Geralt of Rivia. The Witcher on Netflix shot to prominence as one of the service’s most watched TV series, but it has also been one of the most contentious and divisive. Despite being based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series, The Witcher has altered the original material in a number of ways that have angered both longtime viewers and recent additions.
The Witcher season 3 corrected many of these issues and was far more faithful to its source text than season 2, especially with regard to the contentious modifications made to fan-favorite witcher Eskel (Basil Eidenbenz) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra). But with Henry Cavill leaving the series, The Witcher season 4 is up against its biggest test yet with the recasting of Geralt of Rivia. Liam Hemsworth will play Geralt of Rivia for the first time in Season 4, and while the audience’s reaction to his performance is still to be determined, The Witcher has already taken a risk that will pay off handsomely for the series.
According to reports, The Witcher Season 5 is being developed ahead of Liam Hemsworth’s Season 4 premiere.
Netflix revealed months in advance of the third season’s premiere that Henry Cavill would be departing from The Witcher, with Liam Hemsworth slated to replace Cavill as Geralt of Rivia in the fourth season. There are now further concerns about how Hemsworth’s involvement in the series will play out and whether or not Geralt’s altered physical look will be addressed in the program because The Witcher season 3’s conclusion did nothing to build up the casting. Above all, there is a great deal of anticipation and skepticism over Hemsworth’s portrayal of Geralt, especially considering that fans of the novels and video games thought Cavill was a “perfect” fit for the role.
While fans eagerly await the first glimpse of Hemsworth in full Geralt of Rivia regalia, season 5 of The Witcher appears to be in the works. Season 4 is set to begin filming in March 2024. The Witcher season 5 is reportedly in the early stages of development (via Redanian Intelligence), despite the fact that Netflix has not yet made an official announcement about a renewal. This is in contrast to the streaming giant’s original plan to produce seasons 4 and 5, back-to-back, which was disrupted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Redanian Intelligence claims that during the Christmas break, the writers of The Witcher began work on the script for season 5.
The article also states that there would be a break in production between season 4 and season 5, which will allow authors plenty of time to develop the fifth season’s plot. If The Witcher hadn’t undergone a significant cast recast, The Witcher season 5’s current development wouldn’t have been such a dangerous decision. The show needs to see how well or poorly Hemsworth’s portrayal of the renowned witcher is received and whether it meshes with the other characters.
The Witcher will lose viewer interest if Hemsworth’s Geralt isn’t able to win over the public, but even in that case, the show can benefit immensely from the development of season 5.
Some of the Best Stories from the Books Will be Covered in The Witcher Season 5
Even though it’s risky that The Witcher season 5 was in development prior to Hemsworth’s Geralt premiere, this is wonderful news for the series. The Witcher will cover some of the most significant stories from the books in a fifth season, leaving as few unresolved issues in the tales of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri (Freya Allan). Season 5 of The Witcher would have to cover The Tower of the Swallow and possibly The Lady of the Lake since season 4 is anticipated to cover the novel Baptism of Fire.
Leo Bonhart, a bounty hunter, captures Ciri in The Tower of the Swallow. Ciri escapes and enters a different reality, and Geralt, with the aid of Dandelion (Jaskier), Milva, Regis, and Cahir, continues to search for her. The Lady of the Lake witnesses Ciri’s escape from the elves and her final reunion with Geralt and Yennefer once she returns to her right dimension with the help of Nimue. However, the story of this extraordinary family does not end happily.
